so, who’s going to blink first?

My guess is Donald. The democrats will do anything to deny him his wall. Anything. The Republicans realize it was a dumb campaign promise and was never supposed to be real.

My prediction: he will lose more republican support, and will eventually declare “emergency”, which will immediately be met with legal challenge, make its way to the Supreme Court, where they’ll side with Trump, a Wall will be started, then a budget will be passed, Trump will claim victory, then Wall will have funding cut, Trump will throw a tantrum, and life will go on.

And then there’s this asshole: Lindsey Graham calls on Trump to use emergency powers for border wall

This will remain at an impasse until some Senate Republicans grow a pair and oppose the President. It’s too bad those principled Senators like Jeff Flake left rather than stick around to oppose him. I can guarantee you (at least I hope desperately) that Schumer and Pelosi will keep House Democrats lined up behind them. I don’t see that as a problem. Eight House Republicans broke with Trump to get the IRS and Treasury reopened, though it had no hope of passing. Even if the Dems do crack, this idiotic wall will be locked up in eminent domain litigation for ages, long after Trump leaves office. It’s become a pathetic joke. If he pulls that emergency powers gambit, let’s see the House impeach him for abuse of power. THERE IS NO CRISIS. This is totally manufactured. Illegal border crossings are not rising. This chart is based on USCBP data .

Blink? Trump is going to declare an emergency within the next 10 days it seems and then raid military money. So much for all his criticism of Obama over using executive power when congress isn’t cooperating.

But there will be legal challenges and it’ll take long enough to get ramped up that he won’t really have much progress by next year.

All of this is just me  guessing.

Graham is just trying to pass the buck. Republicans know the wall is stupid and doesn’t have much support outside of Fox and Friends and Cheeto’s mouth breathing base, so they want Cheeto to force the issue so they can claim plausible deniability.

I’d like to think the D’s will stand firm, but I don’t trust them much - however they do have the leverage here, and Congressional Republicans know it.

The longer this goes, the more likely it is that the Rs break rank, and Cheeto does something even dumber to claim victory. Like taking money from FEMA...

I’m guessing Trump goes to his emergency powers thing and orders construction. Then that gets immediately tied up in the courts, where I’d expect it to lose, but who knows. Regardless, once that process is started he caves on getting money for the wall through traditional means, and the budget can pass.

The government gets reopened, the Democrats get to call Trump out on abusing his power, maybe stop his wall (if t hey can’t they can blame the courts), Trump either gets at least some of his wall or if he doesn’t he can blame the Democrats and the c ourts. Seems like the way out of this stupid mess where no one has to take responsibility, which makes it the most likely outcome to me.

You’re right because the White House budget was for only 1.6 2 months ago.

“ the Budget requests $1.6 billion to construct approximately 65 miles of border wall in south Texas”

The major problem is that there’s pretty much nothing legally stopping a President from declaring a state of emergency for any damn reason he chooses . We Americans are learning just how many more checks & balances we really need to limit executive power...

He is, from what I’ve gathered. Pretty sure this was the turning point:

“ Maurice Cohen, a Polish Holocaust survivor, reportedly urged his son not to protect Trump and said that he did not survive the Holocaust to have his name “sullied” by the president, a person familiar with the conversation told the Journal.”

Republican senators/congressmen have nothing to do with this. They had a deal agreed on that went up for signature , and then Trump blew it all up. Rs aren’t negotiating because they know it’s pointless unless Trump is on board. The man (child) won’t listen to reason. This is between him and the Democratic leaders, and both sides are digging their heels in hard.

The vast majority of Republicans didn’t want the shutdown (there are a few in Congress that got in Trump’s ear and pushed him to do this, plus Hannity, etc.). I think you’re right that Pelosi’s not giving in, but I don’t see Trump budging either. Pretty sure they call this an “impasse”.

Sadly, he’s only a “lame duck” if the Democrats manage to put up a decent candidate in 2020... It’s hard to imagine that he could get reelected, but it was hard to imagine he could get elected in the first place. If unemployment stays low, if the economy gets back on track, if he gets some “wins” related to his tariffs somehow... I wouldn’t count it out just yet. Hopefully he’ll be impeached and removed before it comes to that.

Nope tax changes removing state/local deductions will hit hard over the next few months, combined with the effects of the shutdown and tariffs, economy will be in the tank by the end of the year .  I have a buddy in government in Canada, and they are planning for a U.S. recession in 2020 as part of this year’s budget.

Any allegia nce Cohen once had to Trump has completely evaporated.

And he’s already going to prison, so he has nothing to hide. His testimony should be very powerful (not that any ardent Trump supporters will be swayed, but hopefully some Rs with a shred of a conscience left will reconsider their willingness to impeach).

I don’t think there’s much hope in that. In their desperation to hold onto their base, they are turning to Steve King , an bigot and white supremacist who claims he isn’t because he greeted “all Iowans” while seated at a desk with a Confederate flag on it.

Clearly, most have gone all-in for partisanship to get whatever “wins” for their side they can while Trump’s in office, but I still hold out hope that the Mueller Report will be so damning that the House and S enate will both vote unanimously to impeach him. Completely pie in the sky thinking, I know, but this is what I feel like we need at this point to reset our political system and move forward.
